Us Team Rider Christy Prior Season Summed Up

General store news // Girls News // Snow

If you havnt heard the name Christy Prior in New Zealand Snowboarding scene then you have been stuck in a cave.

Christy has been turning heads not only in the street but everywere you might find a flick of snow, she is rated one of N.Z top female snowboarders and is one to keep a close eye on.

Unfortunately Christy was out for all of August with a shoulder injury and only just started back on the snow a day before the last TRIC slopestyle at Remarks on the 24th of September but she still managed a couple of results including a career best at the Auckland big air.

Christy has been invited to train with the New Zealand Olympic team at the spring camp which will be held ar Cardrona starting on Monday 3rd October. She then will be heading back over to Breckenridge, Colorado where she will be back training and aiming to attend the Dew tour, US Open and possibly the World Champs in Oslo.

Here are a few highlights of the 2011 season.

MOUNTAIN DEW AMBASSADOR – CHRISTY PRIOR (SNOWBOARDER)

Hello all, my name is Christy Prior and I am an ambassador for Mountain Dew for freestyle snowboarding. I have been snowboarding for six years now and from the get go I dove head first (quite literally at times) into the freestyle side of snowboarding. The excitement generated from this aspect of the sport tests your ability and, if governed by the right attitude, the fun and progression you experience is thoroughly addictive and near impossible to discontinue. Once you start, you can’t stop. Snowboarding at an international level takes you all over the world, and the places you see and the people you meet are priceless.

I spent the northern hemisphere winter based in Breckenridge, Colorado USA. There I trained extensively with my main goal of building my mindset up to the level I needed to push the boundaries of my physical capabilities. As I was prominently a rail rider, I wanted to move more towards slopestyle, which is jumps as well as rails, especially now that slopestyle has been confirmed for the 2014 Winter Olympics. To make this transition, I worked on extending my bag of tricks considerably, mainly focusing on jumps, which I feel was a success. As well as fine-tuning my aerial awareness, I was able to gain a decent amount of media coverage over the internet through filming, photo shoots and competitions. I also landed my first photo, a full page at that, in NZ Snowboarder magazine.

MOUNTAIN DEW AMBASSADOR – CHRISTY PRIOR (SNOWBOARDER)

I’m happy to say I had a successful competition season also, even though training was my focus this year. I placed in numerous events including winning the ‘Volcom Peanut Butter Rail Jam at Keystone’ and the ‘CMC Rail Jam’ both in Colorado, USA. I then returned home to New Zealand where I took out the Auckland ‘Big Air’ invitational with a front rodeo 720, not only winning the women’s division but also winning ‘Best Overall’ out of the men’s and women’s divisions. This was definitely a career best for me. Shortly after this I cashed in another first at the ‘Remarkables Slopestyles’, but just when I thought my focus on jump training had paid off and I was ready for the international events in August, I took a fall that put me out for the season. Sometimes you just have to take the good with the bad.

As with all extreme sports, they come with a price. More often than not, your body endures a beating that comes with the territory. Even the best in the game could provide you with a respectable list of injuries snowboarding is responsible for, but I would say nearly all would vouch they were worth the price. Yes, I guess you do have to be a glutton for punishment as sometimes the love for the sport is one sided. I find the recovery period can either make or break an athlete as it tests your mental strength. I have had my fair share of season ending injuries, including my grade III AC separation, which I am currently nursing right now. I choose to use the time to chip away at my Bachelor of Business Degree, earn some money to fund my expensive chosen sport as well as mentally train (studies show that this can be as good or sometimes better than physical training) so that I can come back stronger. Its hard to always find a positive in every situation, but there is always one there if you know how to look for it.

MOUNTAIN DEW AMBASSADOR – CHRISTY PRIOR (SNOWBOARDER)

Snowboarding is so much fun. It has been the main player in my life for these past few years and will continue to be for many more to come. If you get the chance to get into this awesome sport you will never regret it and you will for sure have a blast! Like most sports it can be expensive to start but there are plenty of great places out there to hire gear for a reasonable price. If you were up to committing to your own set up, the crew at Underground Skate, Orewa can definitely help ensure that you are purchasing the gear that is right for you. If a whole set up is out of the question for you at this time, the one thing I would recommend buying is a good pair of boots. Comfortable and fitted boots are imperative to your enjoyment on the snow, and when you are having fun is when you are most likely to progress!

Get into it and don’t forget your Mountain Dew!

US team rider CHRISTY PRIOR gets 7th in the Burton AM slopestyle -USA!

Snow

Wow, seriously, I love this place -its incredible! Just had three of the most amazing days riding Breckenridge, CO  with good people, great park and today even the weather put it on for us… sunny, blue and B.E.A.utiful! Some days I find your just on your game and the progression you achieve from this just gives you the biggest kick ever! Who needs drugs??… Just go snowboarding!! I’m working tomorrow and the weekend but Friday I have the day off and…. its onnnn!

Also, last weekend we had the Burton AM slopestyle at Winter Park, Colorado, USA….  The caliber of riding was just phenomenal…  For the guys it was show us your double cork and for us ladies there were backside rodeo’s, flips, spinning to win -the works! We had a good kiwi crew there with Jay Walsh finishing 6th overall, Ben Comber with some of the steeziest back 7?s I’ve seen and Stefi Luxton throwing huge front side 540?s over the last jump -unfortunately not quite landing her run and just missing out on finals (which she made up for with a 5th placing at the Canadian Burton Open- so sick!). I placed 7th over all, not quite getting the run I would have liked but it was a great ice breaker for me getting back into it as it was my first slopestyle in nearly two years- and god damn was I nervous!!! Rails are my comfort zone…. not boosting ridiculously fast into large jumps! Hah. But…. I must admit this jumping business…. kind of addictive? All in all it was a good day, and everybody had a blast!

Here’s a shot from our urban session the other night…. I’m working on getting some mag shots this season and this was a perfect warm up rail to start on before we go scaring ourselves sh#tless hitting the good stuff!

Over and out….

Christy.
